Aanandi :: The Tarpa Dance

2,400.00

The Warli tribe of Maharashtra specializes in wall art, encapsulating their day-to-day life. They also put importance on celebrating the joy of life, which is depicted in the central painting of the jatra, and the Ferris wheel in the frame.

Dokra, locally known as “Bharai kaam”, is the art of sculpting brass with the ancient technique of wax casting. The metal is cast into crafted molds, which the tribals create themselves, in their furnaces, and with their specialized tools. Practiced in West Bengal, Orissa, and Madhya Pradesh, this metal craft finds different forms of expression, each art form uniquely different in style and manifestation from the others.

Both styles are combined here into a base of utility, as simple as being a wall frame. Along with that, we aspire to adorn your wall with art, to accentuate your life with color.

Katha (Story behind artefact): The Tarpa dance is integral to the Warli’s tribal identity, and it reinforces their sense of oneness with each other and the nature that surrounds them. The Tarpa is danced to serve as a reminder of all individuals always belonging to a larger group. It invokes the importance of relying on the group’s strength to fulfil individual goals, ultimately for the betterment of community. Beneath the Warli glass painting is a Dokra cast of two people in conjunction with promoting relationships and their power. Let this artefact invoke the strength of your own community, and inspire your connections to be equally strong!
Riti (method): The confluence of the Warli and the Dokra styles is perfectly showcased in this artefact. The Warli style from Maharashtra is created through glass-painting, created inhouse by our artisans utilising their incredible eyes for detail. The Dokra style from Odisha is cast through wax into moulds in a centuries-old process known as Bharai Kaam. Thus, these two styles succeed in invoking a sense of collectiveness and relationship in their simultaneity.
