There are about nineteen different tribes in the Gujarati area of Kutchh, and all have their own distinctive styles of craft.
Hand embroidery has been practiced by women in Kutchh as a form of personal expression and used as a symbol of community identity for centuries. They embroider, paint and knit for their families and communities, for daily wear as well as functional use. Their creativity, however, shines through them and they try to make these as elaborate as possible, pouring in many generations of love and faith into these pieces.
